As the use of tablets in schools continues to grow, so the number of apps available for the education sector has exploded. Whether, you’re a teacher or parent, researching and picking the right app to support your children is not only tricky but potentially time consuming and expensive. We’ve worked with a primary school teacher, reviewing over 100 apps to produce a list of our favourites – saving you time and money.

Here’s our review of five of the best maths related apps.

Squeebles times tables

(Ages 6-10)

Squeebles times tables 2 AppThis brightly coloured and engaging app encourages children to practise their times tables to earn rewards. These rewards can be used to collect their favourite Squeebles.

The app provides lots of useful practice areas, including: times tables, word problems and missing number problems. However, the teaching aspect of the app is basic with the children asked to copy a given number sentence for each times table.

Overall, through the use of the  Squeebles, children will be entertained but will not necessarily learn new skills or techniques to further develop their knowledge of times tables.

Maths Bakery

(Ages 7-9)

Math Bakery AppAn easy to use app that can be used both at home and in the classroom to allow children to develop their confidence in using the column method for addition and subtraction.

Through individual or two player ‘duals’ children work through a series of questions which automatically places the child’s answer into the correct column and reminds them to exchange first in order to reach the correct answer.

This app should be used by children that have been exposed to the column method already as a stimulating method to keep them engaged.

Overall, a fun and child friendly app that is great for practising when a free 10/15 minutes arises.

Zap Zap Kindergarten Math

(Ages 4-7)

Zap Zap Kindergarten Math AppThrough the basis of a story, Zap Zap Kindergarten Math explores maths for the infant age group. This app has three areas of the maths curriculum covered – numbers, shapes and measurements and addition & subtraction. Children will enjoy controlling the spaceship to explore the different planets and there are many levels within each area to keep them entertained for hours.

However, this app will require an adult to help navigate and work with children as the app is difficult to follow at times. The teaching aspect of the app is accessed when the child enters an incorrect answer and simply shows the correct answer. This means the adult will need to show and explain why the answer was incorrect for the child to learn from their mistake.

Overall, an entertaining and visually pleasing app with lots of scope for practice but it is it limited to that.

Montessori: Add & Subtract

(Ages 4-6)

Montessori Add & Subtract appA very simple yet effective free app which combines different visual aids to teach and challenge children learning to add and subtract.

Comprising three levels for both addition and subtraction, Add and Subtract begins by allowing children to explore basic number sentences and work up to missing number problems.

Overall, an excellent introduction for children exploring addition and subtraction number patterns.

Rocket Math Multiply

(Ages 7-11)

Rocket Math Multiply AppRocket Math is visually engaging app which is designed to help increase children’s fluency and speed in multiplication and division. Whilst it could be used in school, this app is great for use at home with the app conforming to the ‘little and often’ theory and it includes a function which forces the user to have a 30 minute break after five minutes of work.

Another useful feature is the reporting section which parents and teachers will find useful for recognising any particular areas the child found tricky.

Overall, a fantastic app that will engage children whilst helping them to improve their multiplication and division skills.

The other day, while I was at work, my sister stole my apple
ipad and tested to see if it can survive a thirty foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My apple ipad is now broken and
she has 83 views. I know this is entirely off topic but I had to share
    it with someone!
